Counting Beyond 10

The Base Ten System

Incite Wonder follows best practice in teaching children to count beyond ten. Instead of teaching children the unique words we use to identify quantities greater than ten, we teach them the concept of the base ten system. Instead of saying, "nine, ten, eleven, twelve...", we say, " nine, ten, one ten plus one, one ten plus two...". When we get to twenty, we say, "two tens, two tens plus one, two tens plus two...". Next we teach the special names for groups of ten. "The special name for two tens is twenty. The special name for three tens is thirty...". By teaching this way, the child creates the construct that 23 is two tens (twenty) plus 3. Last of all, we teach the child the names of the numbers 11 to 19.
